Connecting landlords and tenants through a redesigned web and mobile experience

Overview

10Ants supports three connected groups: landlords and property managers, current tenants, and people searching for a place to rent.

The original MVP communicated the product idea, but inconsistent navigation, incomplete journeys, weak information hierarchy, and the absence of reusable patterns made the experience difficult to understand and extend.

I led the end-to-end redesign of the landlord web app and tenant mobile app. Working with stakeholders and developers, I restructured the core journeys, introduced consistent interaction and status patterns, and created a scalable foundation for implementation.

Challenges

The challenge was not simply to improve individual screens.

Many actions began on one platform and required a response on the other: a tenant could submit an application or maintenance request on mobile, while a landlord needed to review and manage it on the web.

The main issues I identified were:

  • An inconsistent visual language across screens

  • Confusing navigation and unclear relationships between sections

  • Incomplete or disconnected user flows

  • Weak information hierarchy

  • No scalable design system

  • Poor behaviour across different screen sizes

The challenge was therefore bigger than visually polishing individual screens. The redesign therefore needed to create two platform-appropriate experiences that still behaved like parts of one connected system.

The Goal:

The redesign focused on creating an MVP that was:

  • Easier to understand and navigate

  • Consistent across the landlord web app and tenant mobile app

  • Clear about the status of properties, applications, payments, and requests

  • Appropriate to the tasks and screen sizes of each audience

  • Scalable enough for the product and engineering teams to extend

For users, this meant reducing the effort required to complete everyday rental tasks. For the business, it meant turning an early collection of screens into a product foundation that could move confidently into development.

My Approach

  1. Auditing the existing MVP

I began with a UX audit of the existing product. I reviewed the screens as a connected experience rather than as isolated interfaces, looking for breaks in navigation, missing states, inconsistent patterns, unclear actions, and places where the hierarchy did not support the user's next step.

This helped separate cosmetic issues from structural ones. A different colour or component would not solve a journey that was incomplete or difficult to understand.

  1. Reconnecting the User journey

I mapped the MVP around its core rental workflows and the moments where an action on one platform required a response on the other. The aim was to make every journey feel complete from the user's entry point to the action, confirmation, status, and next step, without losing the connection between tenant and property-manager activities.

The redesigned MVP covered:

  • Property discovery and enquiries

  • Tenant onboarding and applications

  • Rent and payment management

  • Maintenance requests

  • Messaging and communication

  • Property and tenant management

  • Account setup, settings, and supporting states

  1. Building a scalable interface foundation

Because the earlier MVP did not have a consistent design foundation, I introduced reusable patterns across the redesigned web and mobile apps. The products share a clear visual language and predictable status patterns, while navigation, components, density, and interaction behaviour remain appropriate to the tasks of each audience and platform.

This helped reduce visual fragmentation and gave developers clearer patterns to reuse during implementation. It also created a stronger base for future product features without forcing the team to redesign common interactions each time.

  1. Clarifying navigation and Hierarchy

I reorganised navigation around the tasks of each audience. The web app prioritised oversight and management for landlords and property managers, while the mobile app focused on the immediate actions tenants and prospective tenants needed to complete.

Across dashboards and management screens, I strengthened hierarchy by separating overview information from detailed actions. Repeated actions and statuses were given predictable placement and treatment, reducing the need for users to relearn the interface from one section to another.

  1. Property discovery and enquiries

Within the mobile app, the discovery experience was designed to help prospective tenants move from browsing to expressing interest with less uncertainty. Property information, actions, and enquiry steps were organised into a clearer sequence.

  1. Tenant onboarding and applications

I redesigned mobile onboarding and application flows to make account setup and tenant progression feel connected. The structure prioritised clear steps, understandable inputs, and visible feedback throughout the journey.

Property and tenant management

The redesigned web app brings property, tenant, payment, maintenance, and communication information into a more consistent management structure. The goal was to help landlords and property managers maintain oversight without overwhelming them with equal-weight information.

  1. Rent and payment management

Payment-related screens were organised to make financial information and available actions easier to interpret. Consistent hierarchy and status patterns help users understand what has been paid, what requires attention, and what action is available next.

  1. Validating and refining the experience

The redesign was shaped through stakeholder feedback, collaboration with developers, and usability testing. Stakeholder reviews kept the work aligned with the MVP's product goals, while developer collaboration helped ensure that the proposed patterns and responsive behaviour could be implemented.

Usability testing was used to check whether users could understand the navigation, follow the redesigned workflows, and identify their next actions. The findings guided refinements to hierarchy, labels, flow continuity, and interface feedback before handoff.

Outcome

The redesigned MVP was approved by stakeholders and is currently being implemented.

The immediate outcome is a connected, implementation-ready foundation for the landlord web app and tenant mobile app, supported by reusable navigation, status, interaction, and responsive patterns.

Because the product has not yet launched, product impact will be evaluated after release using workflow completion, usability, support, and engagement data.

What I learned

This project reinforced that redesigning an MVP is not simply about making old screens look better. The most valuable work happened at the system level: reconnecting incomplete journeys, creating clearer hierarchy, making repeated interactions predictable, and balancing user needs with development constraints.

It also strengthened my approach to collaborating with stakeholders and developers throughout the design process. Bringing both perspectives into the work early helped the redesign move beyond a concept and into active development.

Closing statement

By redesigning the full 10Ants web and mobile MVP, I helped turn an inconsistent early product into two clearer, connected experiences: a management-focused web app for landlords and a task-focused mobile app for tenants and prospective tenants.
